A Special Quilt
Twelve years ago I made a quilt for my boyfriend for his high school graduation. I was a freshman in college and loved working on the quilt a couple days a week in the large TV room of my dorm. I started it in February of 1997 and finished in May. I thought it would be a sweet gift for him and that he would use it as a bedspread at college. I thought it would last forever...A couple of days after his graduation, and the gift, his grandfather took me aside and asked if I liked Linus of Peanuts fame... I said yes, not having any clue why he would ask. He said "good, because he has carried that blanket around ever since you gave it to him". From that day forward he took my quilt with him anywhere he thought he would be sleeping. It went to college, and boyscout camp, and his first apartment and then finally to our home. We switched over to a down comforter and the quilt only got pulled out once in a while.
Now 7 years after we were married it is on its last leg. I thought I would replace it when it turned 10, I bought fabric and figured out a pattern but there didn't seem to be any urgency. Plus, we lived in a one bedroom apartment at the time, where the options were: Cook, or Sew. For a while I worked with the sewing machine at one end of the table and I cooked on the other but that didn't last long.
We now live in a two bedroom Condo, and I have my space to work in, so I have been working on a couple of other quilts. The other night my husband asked if he could sleep with his quilt. I looked at him and said "yes, but if this is going to be a regular thing I need to replace it". On night number 2 I decided to start mending the tears/holes and to break out the fabric for the new quilt. That was three weeks ago. I finished piecing the top this weekend and sandwiched it yesterday morning. I am hoping to quilt it this week and hopefully finish it over Memorial Day weekend. We'll see how far I can get. More pictures to follow...
